Abstract

1384383 Variable pitch propellers LIPS NV 23 Aug 1972 [26 Aug 1971] 40105/71 Heading B7V In a variable-pitch ship propeller having a movable cylinder 5, 6 co-operating with a stationary piston 8, 9 and operatively connected with blades 3, there is provided an auxiliary piston 29 located within a hollow stationary piston 9 whereby emergency control may take place by direct contact of the auxiliary piston 29 with the movable cylinder 5, 6. In a preferred embodiment Fig. 1 oil pressure is supplied via a non rotatory supply sleeve 15 to movable and fixed concentric pipes 10, 12 respectively, which open into cylinders 5, 6. An oil tank 17 is connected via channels 20, 21 to the hub interior for lubricating bearings of blades 3 and mechanisms 4 for pitch adjustment. Oil under pressure is supplied to the auxiliary piston 29 via a separate channel 30 through hose 31. In a modification, Fig. 2, the hose 31 is connected to a second stationary supply sleeve 32. In a further modification, Fig. 3, the channels 19, 20, 21 of the lubricating system are also used for moving the auxiliary piston 29 by the provision of a manually operated three-way valve 34 and an automatic non return ball valve 35.
