Abstract
1384276 Laminates KOEPP AG and KALLE AG 25 Feb 1972 [25 Feb 1971] 8856/72 Heading B5N [Also in Division B2] A composite material comprises a web of foam plastics material and a film of polyamide and/or polyurethane bonded thereto, the film being highly extensible, having a thickness of less than 100 Á and being bonded to the foam by thermal decomposition products of the foam. The foam may be a polyester- or polyether-polyurethane or a polyethylene. The polyurethane of the film may be derived from a polyether or a polyester and may be admixed with polyvinyl chloride, polyacrylonitrile, polyvinylidene chloride, polyamide, a cellulose ester or a copolymer of vinylidene chloride and acrylonitrile. The composite material may be made by preforming the film on a dimensionally stable support, applying the film to a plastics foam surface on which tacky decomposition products have been previously formed by thermal treatment, e.g. by flame treatment, and removing the support after the bond between the foam plastics surface and the film has solidified. The support, which may have a roughened surface, e.g. formed by projecting fine grain pigment particles, may be a polyamide, polyimide, stretched polyethylene terephthalate, polytetrafluoroethylene, polytrifluorochloroethylene, polyvinylidene chloride, polyacrylonitrile, polyformaldehyde, cellulose acetate or cellulose hydrate. The film forming material is preferably applied to the support in the form of a solution or paste, e.g. by roller, intaglio printing or screen printing, any solvents or dispersing agents being removed in a drier, the film optionally being built up as a plurality of layers which may have different properties, other synthetic materials being optionally included as an intermediate layer. In a preferred embodiment, the foam web is supported by a textile web, e.g. a woven or knitted fabric or a tangled fibre fleece or another sheet-like material on the surface thereof remote from the film.
