1384093 Tensioning, winding and unwinding webs BELOIT CORP 16 March 1972 12475/72 Heading B8R A roller is mounted on a pair of support members supported on pivotable arms which permit movement of the roller along a horizontal path in order to regulate the tension of a moving web wrapped around one half of the periphery of the roller, or to assist the splicing of a new web to an expiring web in an unwinding apparatus, or to assist in attaching a web to a fresh core in a winding apparatus. As a tension regulating device, the roller 1 is mounted on support members 3 supported on arms 4, 7 such that a portion of the possible translational movement of the roller and support members is along a horizontal path. A web 10 is guided around rollers 13 and 14 such that it is wrapped around roller 1, the web being drawn from a roll 11 by driven rollers 12. Hydraulic or pneumatic cylinders 15 apply a force to the roller 1 via arms 4 and support members 3 to oppose and balance the force applied thereto by the normal tension in the moving web. Thus the roller moves along the horizontal path in response to any additional web tension relative to the opposing force thereby reducing this additional tension. Consequential movement of the arms 4 may be used to give a visual indication of change in tension via a pointer 18 or may be used to actuate an electrical or pneumatic transducer to control web tension by altering web speed or drag, e.g. controlling the rheostat of an electrical roller drive circuit. The cylinders 15 may be replaced by springs. As a splicing device, two rollers 107, 108 are mounted on support members 104 supported by pivotal arms 102, 103. On near expiry of the web 10 being unwound from a roll 11 on a rotatable turret 150, a new roll 151 is moved to the unwinding position shown in Fig. 1 and rotated to web speed. The support members 104 are then moved leftwards by air cylinder motors 109 until roller 107 presses the adhesively coated, expiring web end on to the adhesively coated leading end of the rotating new roll whereby splicing is effected. Any surplus expiring web may be severed by a knife 161. As an attaching device, two rollers (208), (209), Fig. 3 (not shown), are again provided, a full web roll (35) on a rotatable turret (250) being moved from a winding position and replaced by a new core (211), the web (10<SP>1</SP>) being fed under roller (209), over roller (208), under the core (211) and over a roller (276) to the roll (35). The support members (204) are then moved rightwards by air cylinder motors (207) until the web is nipped between roller (208) and core (211). A curved knife member (287) having a brush attachment is then actuated by a cylinder motor (26) to sever the web and brush the leading severed end around the new core thereby attaching it, without adhesive, thereto. The knife member is then retracted. The roller (208) may run on the new roll to tension its windings. A tensioning device, splicing device and attaching device may be combined in a single apparatus for unwinding, treating and then rewinding a web, which may be of paper, plastics, foil or fibre or laminations thereof. Filaments of wire or ropes may also be treated.
