Abstract

1464961 Feeding webs E BAUER 7 May 1974 [9 May 1973] 20136/74 Heading B8R An apparatus for controlling the unwinding of a plastics web comprises a web roll support including mandrels 10, 11 for the web roll 12 from which the web 13 is unwound intermittently by a web feeding means (not shown) through the intermediary of three rollers 34, 35 and 17, two of which 34, 35 are fixed and the third one 17 of which is mounted rotatably on a pair of arms 14, 15 pivotally carried by a shaft 5 and spring biased away from the rollers 34, 35 to control the size of a web tensioning loop and apply a brake 22 to a disc 23, fast with the spindle 10, when the loop exceeds a predetermined size. The web roll support includes a pair of mandrel supports 8, 9 which are movable relative to each other to accommodate different widths of web rolls 12 by means of a hand operated spindle with oppositely handed threads. The trailing end of an expiring web is spliced to the leading end of a replacement web by impaling the ends on a needle bar (67, Fig. 3) and abutting the webs (68, 69) against a bar 37, which is disposed between web guide rollers 35, 36, there being provided a manually operated thermo-welding bar (64).
