Abstract

1382941 Hypodermic injection device PHILIPS GLOEILAMPENFABRIEKEN NV 7 Feb 1973 [10 Feb 1972] 6039/73 Heading A5R A hypodermic injection device comprises a cartridge holder 104 containing an ampoule 135, a cannula 150, and a gun-type assembly 200 whereby a spring 138 advances the ampoule and inserts the cannula until arrested by a buffer sprang 210 interposed between the ampoule 135 and the nose of the cartridge holder 161. The gun spring 138 then operates a piston in the ampoule 135 to inject the medicament until the buffer spring 210 overcomes the gun spring 138 and retracts the cannula. An outer sleeve 100 contains a concentric sleeve 104 within which fits the cartridge assembly, comprising the ampoule 135 on which is mounted the cannula 150. The sleeve 104 has a tapered end 156 seated by a stopper 158 pierceable by the cannula. At its end supporting the cannula 150 the ampoule 135 has a cylindrical projection 86 surrounded by or forming an abutment Fig. 3 (not shown) for the buffer spring 210. The ampoule cylinder 136 is closed by a piston 148. An annular bead 160 on the inner wall of sleeve 104 retains the ampoule. A plunger 162 has a head 164 with several tabs 168 extending radially and engaging the rear end face of the ampoule. Plunger 162 is held inoperative by lugs 186 at the ends of springy detent arms, which lugs latch on to face 122 of an inner gunsleeve 101. The coil spring 138, concentric with the plunger body, is thereby compressed between the plunger head 164 and the end wall of sleeve 101. A safety pin 144 prevents inadvertent operation of the device. With a safety cap 142 removed, pressure of the tapered end 156 on the patient causes relative movement between sleeves 192 and 100, whereby a cam surface 198 cams the detent lugs 186 together, until they pass through opening 120 and allow spring 138 to advance the plunger 164. Initially, the plunger tabs 168 force the ampoule off the bead 160, so that the cannula 150 travels through the stopper and into the patient. Movement of the ampoule compresses the buffer spring 210 which stops the ampoule. The tabs 168 then deform to allow the plunger to continue and thus advance piston 148 in the ampoule, injecting the medicament. As the gun spring 138 extends its force diminishes until the spring 212 overcomes it and retracts the cannula slightly.
