Abstract

1380561 Oil-repellant coating IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 18 May 1972 [23 June 1971] 29390/71 Heading B2E [Also in Division D1] A porous surface is made repellent to oils having an average molecular weight greater than 200 by applying to the surface a fluorocarbon surfactant containing a hydrophilic group and a terminal branched perfluoroalkenyl group of at least 5 carbon atoms derived from an oligomer of tetrafluoroethylene or hexafluoropropene. Preferred oligomers are tetramer, pentamer and hexamer of tetrafluoroethylene having the formula C 8 F 15 , C 10 F 19 or C 12 F 23 . The hydrophilic group is preferably an ionic especially an anionic group for the treatment of cellulosic surfaces, e.g. paper and board. The anionic group may be carboxylate, sulphonate, phosphonate, and phosphate ester. The fluorocarbon may be deposited as a solution or emulsion, e.g. by immersion, spraying. The porous material may be wood, leather, textiles, concrete, asbestos, paper, cardboard used for packaging, writing or bank-notes.
