Abstract
1377952 Mechanical switches; switch handles G L G BRADSHAW 19 Nov 1971 [27 Nov 1970 30 April 1971 18 June 1971] 56558/70 12359/71 and 28612/71 Heading H1N A switch formed by the knob of, e.g., a gear control lever (not shown), comprises a circular cross-section insulated housing 20 formed in two parts 21, 22 and secured together, e.g. by a bolt 25, for rotation about an axis in line with that of the lever, which may be screwed or clamped into aperture 23, the switch operating with relative rotation of the housing parts 21, 22. A washer 28 holds the halves separated and a coil spring 30 received in hemi-cylindrical recesses 31, 32 in each part of the knob limits the amount of relative rotation of the parts and causes the parts to return to a central position when the operating force is released. Electrical terminals, e.g. 27, are provided in the fixed portion 22, and electrical connection to a moving contact in the rotatable portion 21 may be via the spring 30 or via the bolt 25, a metal bush being provided in the aperture 23 to electrically connect the bolt to the control lever. The spring may also be used as a bridging member for contacts in either part of the housing, and a double spring arrangement may be provided to prevent accidental operation of such an arrangement. A contact member 42, Fig. 5, on the rotatable portion 21 may depend into an arcuate recess 44 in the portion 22 to engage a contact 45 on anticlockwise rotation. The switch may include a thermistor 52, Fig. 8, which is fired on anticlockwise rotation of the rotatable portion and broken on clockwise rotation, the circuit remaining "on" in the central position after being fired. In this embodiment the second spring 50, operated after the main spring 30 by virtue of the additional recess 49 bridges the contacts 47, 48. A successive actuation switch may be formed on the housing, Fig. 10, using a ratchet cam 66 operating sprung roller bridging contacts 63, the sprung peg 70 operating the cam 66 to make and break the contacts with successive rotations in the same direction. Further modifications of switch contacts, i.e. changeover, are shown in Figs. 3, 4, 6, 7, 9 and 11 (not shown).
