Abstract

1377077 Polymer derivatives LUBRIZOL CORP 5 Oct 1971 46281/71 Heading C3P [Also in Divisions C4-C5] Detergent/dispersant additives for lubricants and fuels comprise overbased Group I or II metal salts of an N-acylated aminosulphonic acid which is the reaction product of (1) a carboxylic acid, or acid derivative, containing at least 50 aliphatic carbon atoms exclusive of the carboxyl group, and (2) an aromatic aminosulphonic acid or a monoamino aliphatic sulphonic acid. The overbased salts may be prepared either (i) by reacting said reaction product or a normal salt thereof with an acidic material selected from inorganic acidic gases, inorganic acids and lower aliphatic carboxylic acids in the presence of a promoter and a basically reacting Group I or II metal compound; or (ii) by prereacting a basically reacting Group I or II metal compound with an acidic material as defined in (i) in the presence of an alcohol and an inert organic liquid, and then adding thereto the said reaction product. In examples, overbased barium and calcium salts are prepared from N-acylated aminosulphonic acids derived from (1) polyisobutenyl succinic anhydride, and (2) sulphanilic acid. The viscosity of the products is reduced in some eases by steam-blowing or by reaction with propylene oxide.
