Grates.-The vertical or inclined grate of a gas-producer is provided at the top with a water-header b, the steam generated in which is supplied by pipes d to the ash-pit, and thence, mixed with air, reaches the fire. As shown in Fig. 1, the header b at the top of the grate is kept partly filled with water, its side in contact with the hot coke being always covered, while at the other side is a steam space into which extend the pipes d. The upper ends of the fire-bars a engage a rod f mounted in slotted brackets and provided with lugs which normally engage the underside of the header and thus locks the bars. In modifications, some or all of the fire-bars may take the form of water-tubes connecting the header b with a lower header.
