Abstract

1375670 Coated products MINNESOTA MINING & MFG CO 20 June 1972 [21 June 1971 17 Jan 1972] 02124/74 Divided out of 1375669 Addition to 1375669 Heading B2E [Also in Division C3] A biaxially oriented foil having a coated face comprises a substantially particle free first layer consisting of polyethylene terephthalate and a second layer consisting of a major phase of polyethylene terepthalate and a plurality of minor discontinuous phases of discrete particles, at least two of the discontinuous phases being essentially of mutually insoluble polymers, (a) at least 1% discrete particles of at least one polymer being selected from the class consisting of polypropylene, styreneacrylonitrile polymer, nylon and incompatible polyester and (b) at least 1% discrete particles of at least one polymer selected from the class consisting of polymers of mono α-olefines containing no more than 4 carbon atoms, any polymer so selected being structurally different from any polymer so selected under (a), the coating being adjacent the first layer. Examples described the preparation of fine 2-layer foil structures incorporating inter alia nylon, polycarbonate, polyethylene and polypropylene. Acicular γ-Fe 2 O 3 are subsequently coated onto the face of such foil structures.
