Abstract

A sheeting die of the type described in the parent Specification has a stirring apparatus arranged inside it in which the stirring implements are formed as pins 511 (Fig. 1). They are preferably offset with respect to one another along the length of the die so that all zones of the die, when viewed in a radial direction, are swept through by the pins. As shown in Fig. 3, pairs of adjacent pins 5111 may be interconnected at their ends to prevent them from breaking away when of small cross-sectional area. The material to be moulded may be fed to the die from one or both ends or may be fed to the whole length of the die by one or more screws. As shown in Fig. 4, the screw 11 has a conical tip 12 rotating in a conical casing 14 which communicates with the die channel 4 through a slot-shaped opening 15. Each particle after leaving the screw tip 12 traverses the same distance through the channel 4 to the outlet aperture 7 and the effect of friction, and the <PICT:0929629/IV(a)/1> <PICT:0929629/IV(a)/2> <PICT:0929629/IV(a)/3> <PICT:0929629/IV(a)/4> resulting heating and homogenization, are thus the same over the whole width of the die. In the case of long dies, it is desirable to feed the material by more than one screw, either by two screws directed oppositely to each other and extending over half the length of the die or by two or more screws extending in the same direction and lying either in the same plane or being distributed around the periphery of the die. A die for making two-layered sheets is shown in Fig. 8 (in cross-section), the materials emerging from the two dye channels 4 passing through the gaps 16 to merge at the tip 17 and pass out together through the lipped slot 2. The lips 21 are displaceable towards and away from the central plane of the slot 2 by means of screws 18 so that the thicknesses of the two layers can be adjusted independently of each other.
