Abstract

1373582 Castors GUY RAYMOND ENG CO Ltd 4 Jan 1973 [7 Jan 1972] 889/72 Heading A4U A castor comprises a shell 11 moulded from a synthetic plastics material, a shaft 12 mounted across side walls 14, 15 of the shell so as to support the side walls against compressive and bursting forces, a roller 13 mounted for free running on the shaft 12, and means on the shell laterally offset from the axis of the shaft for mounting the shell pivotally on a support such as a leg or base of an article of furniture. The shell is formed as an injection moulding from nylon or A.B.S., and the roller may also be formed from these materials. A boss 19 on the shell has a bore for receiving a spigot 42 of a pin 41, the bore and spigot having an inter-engaging rib 44 and groove 45, respectively and the castor being freely rotatable about the spigot. Alternatively, the spigot can be non-rotatably moulded or bonded into the boss 19. The shaft ends have grooves 25, 26 and engage in T-slots in the walls 14, 15, convex shaft-retain ing cam faces 28 being formed in the slots. The roller 13 is formed as twin portions 29, 30 free to rotate relative to each other. In a second embodiment, Fig. 8 (not shown), the roller is unitary and it may have a peripheral covering of synthetic rubber or foam polyurethane.
