Abstract

1370778 Dashboards SMITH INDUSTRIES Ltd 24 Sept 1971 [21 Oct 1970] 50003/70 Heading B7H [Also in Division G2] Motor vehicle heating or ventilating controls have panel 1 which is illuminated at 41, 42, and masked so that only the legends show up. Actuating members 11, 12 are provided which extend through slots adjacent' the legends. Each actuating member is movable, and two members 21, 22 or 21, 30 are associated, one with each actuating member, one of the members being moved relative to the other in accordance with the movement of the actuating member, one of the two members carrying, in spaced alignment, a light source 27 or 37, 38, and light guiding means 13 or 17, 18 for guiding light from the source to illuminate the actuating member, and the other member carrying light modifying means 22 or 30 arranged to be interposed between the light source and the light guiding means such that illumination of the actuating member is modified upon movement thereof. As shown, actuating member 11 is a block of transparent material, with, preferably, blackcoated sides, in which the light guide terminates. Modifying means 22 may be a coloured filter which gradually changes in colour from red to blue, so that movement of 11 from "COLD" to "HOT" changes the colour of the actuating member from blue to red. Actuating member 12 has two parts 14 and 15, of transparent material, preferably having a black coating on the sides and between the two parts. Each part has a light guide 17 and 18 terminating in it, and the front face is preferably also painted black except for an arrow head on each, one pointing up, the other down. The light modifying means preferably has a cranked slot therein, and is arranged so that the "up" arrow is illuminated when the actuating member is at "SCREEN", the "DOWN" arrow is illuminated at "CAR" and both are illuminated at "OFF". The various lights are wired in to the instrument-light circuit of the vehicle.
