Abstract
1370001 Blind riveting GRUMMAN AEROSPACE CORP 10 Sept 1971 [6 Nov 1970] 42262/71 Heading B3U A blind rivet having a tubular body with a head is set by generating a stress wave, applying the stress wave to the head of the blind rivet, controlling the intensity and duration of the stress waves to temporarily render the tubular body plastic and exerting a pressure on a stem counter to end simultaneous with the application of the stress wave to the tubular body to draw a former in the tubular body. In operation a capacitor bank 48 is charged by an energy source 44 when a switch 46 is closed. After the capacitor bank is charged, switch 46 is opened and a switch 50 closed whereby a high amperage current pulse, of short duration, flows through a pancake coil 52. A high intensity magnetic field is set up around the coil 52 and this field intersects a driver 54, comprising a disc of aluminium or hardened copper, and induces a current therein. The induced current flowing through the driver sets up a high intensity magnetic field around the driver. The electromagnetic repulsion established by the interaction of the two magnetic fields generates a stress wave in driver 54 which is propagated through amplifier 38 and into the tubular body 56 of a blind rivet assembly 40 thus causing the body 56 to become temporarily plastic. Simultaneously with the electromagnetic repulsion between driver 54 and coil 52 a second electromagnetic repulsion takes place between a driver 86 and the coil 52. This repulsion is transmitted through rod 72 to a stem 58 and acts to draw a former 68, Fig. 2, into the tubular body 56. A blind head is formed since the former is pulled into the body when the latter is in a plastic state. Part of the diameter of the stem 58 is greater than the diameter of the annular opening 62 so that an interference fit occurs between stem 58 and the wall of opening 62 and between the body 56 and the walls of the rivet hole.
