Abstract

1370076 Gauging PUDSEY ENG & SUPPLY CO Ltd 17 Aug 1973 [19 May 1972] 23599/72 Heading G1M [Also in Division E2] A device for use in checking the depth of the void between a railway line and the ballast comprises a pair of jaws 1 and 2 for gripping the bottom flange of the rail, a plunger 6 slidably mounted in the jaw 1 and an adjustable spring collar 5 on the plunger 6. Jaw 2 is mounted on a spindle 3 fixed to jaw 1 and is spring-biased towards jaw 1. Jaw 1 may have a single or two horns 1A, and jaw 2 may have two horns 2A, 2B 90 degrees apart around the axis of spindle 3 and axially spaced along the spindle 3, whereby either horn may be selected by rotation of jaw 2. A catch may be provided to lock jaw 2 in its two angular working positions. A spacer 4 keeps the two jaws a minimum distance apart. The jaws, spacer and collar may be of synthetic plastics material, and the spindle and plunger with its foot 6A of stainless steel or surface treated metal. In use, the device is clamped to the rail and the collar 5 set to limit the upward travel of the plunger. As the ballast is built up beneath the rail, a wedge with a multi-stepped calibrated upper face may be slipped below the foot 6A to check when the void depth is within permitted limits.
