Abstract

1369758 Super-conductors COMPAGNIE GENERALE D'ELECTRICITE 14 Aug 1972 [17 Aug 1971] 37906/72 Headings H1A and A4D A super-conductor of high mechanical strength comprises filamentary braided elements 1 each of which, consisting of super-conductive filaments 10 may be surrounded individually by a metallic sheath 11, and is embedded in a polyethylene or other insulating resinous material matrix 13, the whole being surrounded by a sheath 14 of high mechanical strength such as aluminium alloy which has been extruded thereon. The filaments 1 are stranded together in threes, Fig. 1, in stages 1, 2, 3, to constitute a "Litz" stranded element 4. In a further embodiment the stranded element may also comprise at least one wire imparting to the assembly extra mechanical rigidity.
