1368842 Cubic zirconium dioxide LABORATORII INSTITUTA OBSCHEI I NEORGANICHESKOI KHIMII AKADEMII NAUK UKRAINSKOI SSR V GORODE ODESSE and DONETSKY KHIMIKO METALLURGICHESKY ZAVOD 30 March 1972 14986/72 Heading C1A A method of preparing stabilized, cubic crystal structure, zirconium dioxide comprising mixing basic zirconium carbonate with a stabilizing additive, suitably in an aqueous pulp. The stabilizing additive can be a calcium compound and examples use calcium oxide and calcium carbonate in an amount of 6-7% by wt., with reference to the ZrO2 contained in the basic zirconium carbonate. The pulp is filtered and the residue then calcined at 700-800‹ C. to produce the stabilized cubic zirconium dioxide. The basic zirconium carbonate is obtained by reacting basic zirconium sulphate with a carbonate of an alkali metal or ammonium in an aqueous soln. and the basic zirconium sulphate is an intermediate in the existing process for the production of monoclinic zirconium dioxide.
