Abstract

1368751 Drilling pipes C W BLACKBURN 18 Oct 1972 [11 Aug 1971] 37765/71 Heading- B3C In order to drill a pipe 8, e.g. of plastics or asbestos, to which a split sleeve 2 having a flange 4 is to be permanently attached to form a branch pipe connection (see Specification 1,368,752), an elongated drill housing 28, 38 is secured to the flange 4 and has a threaded end, which mates with a tubular feed screw 40, through which a drill shaft 20 extends. Shaft 20 is driven by a high torque low speed compressed air motor 18, the torque reaction being transmitted by post 48 to bracket 50, through its sliding connection therewith. The drill bit is initially moved inwardly by abutment of the end of screw 40 with a shoulder 42 on shaft 20 to interengage the screw-threads. The motion is continued by rotating hand wheel 46, so that pilot bit 22 first penetrates the pipe wall, to centre the cutter 26. After cutting to a mark indicated on housing 38, the bit 22 retains the cut out part of the pipe, during retraction of the drill. When the apparatus is to be used for cutting a pipe 8 under fluid pressure, a sluice valve is interposed between flanges 4 and 29. Lip seal 34 prevents the fluid from rising up the drill shaft and a valved vent hole 52 is provided for flushing out the swarf.
