Abstract
1368230 Deoxidizing aluminium surfaces AMCHEM PRODUCTS Inc 31 July 1972 [29 July 1971] 35663/72 Heading C7E A solution for surface deoxidizing Al or Al alloys comprises a fluoride and thiourea together with Fe<SP>3+</SP> and/or a combination of Fe<SP>2+</SP> and an oxidizing agent capable of oxidizing Fe<SP>2+</SP> to Fe<SP>3+</SP>. The fluoride is preferably an alkali metal fluoride, e.g. NaF, and the Fe<SP>2+</SP> and Fe<SP>3+</SP> are in the form of ferrous and ferric sulphates. The oxidizing agent is any of H 2 O 2 , per sulphates and permanganates, e.g. persulphates of ammonia, Na or K. The solution can be replenished by adding liquid concentrates, or dry mixtures of the ingredients. The solution can also contain any of surfactants, wetting agents and detergents, and an extra quantity of oxidizing agent is added to oxidize the Fe<SP>2+</SP> ions formed during the deoxidation The material to be deoxidized is degreased, rinsed, treated with the solution by immersion or spraying at 60 to 150F. and pH 0À1-1À8, and finally rinsed and dried. The surface may then be anodized or given a chromate conversion coating.
