Abstract
1363562 Injection moulded polyamide foams BAYER AG 11 Jan 1972 [12 Jan 1971] 1229/72 Heading C3C Polyamide foam mouldings are continuously made by introducing a foamable and polymerizable mixture comprising (a) a lactam having at least 5 ring members (b) a polyisocyanate, or a mixture of a mono-isocyanate and a polyisocyanate, both the isocyanates may be masked, and (c) an alkaline polymerization catalyst into the feed opening of an injection moulder under a pressure of at least 1À2 atmospheres, polymerizing the mixture in the barrel of the injection moulder at a temperature above the m.p. of the resulting polyamide, injecting the mixture while foaming through a nozzle heated to 210-290‹ C. into a mould and after cooling, removing the moulding. The lactam may be α-pyrrolidone, #-caprolactam, oenanthic lactam, caprylic lactam, decanolactam, undecanolactam, lauric lactam, pentadecanolactam, hexadecanolactam or methyl cyclohexanone isoxime. In the examples the polymerizable mixture consisted of a lactam, sodium formate, N-benzyl acetamide, the addition product of hexamethylene diisocyanate or diphenyl methane-4,4<SP>1</SP>-diisocyanate and caprolactam and an organosiloxane hydroxyalkylene block copolymer, with optionally aluminium powder, glass fibres or a silicone.
