Abstract
1363303 Fluid dashpots AG BLAZQUEZ 16 July 1971 33465/71 Heading F2S In an hydraulic shock-absorber for vehicle suspension, a piston 4 in an oil-containing cylinder 2 bears a valve 10 controlling a passage 8 (through the piston) which interconnects the chambers 5 and 6 on either side of it and which is less sensitive to pressure than a valve 26 which controls conduits 12 interconnecting the chamber 5 (in which moves the piston-rod 7) and an annular chamber 3 around the cylinder, so that, when the piston moves downwards on a shock-absorption stroke, the passage 8 remains closed by the valve 10 as shown and oil passes into the chamber 5 through the conduits 12 from the annular chamber 3 (having been displaced from the chamber 6 into the chamber 3 through openings 14, 17, 18 at the other end of the shock-absorber past a valve 16, like valve 26, more sensitive than the valve 10); the openings 17 can, however, be controlled by the vehicle driver by operation of an electromagnetic lock valve 19 so that when they are closed, shock absorption is hardened because some oil passes through a narrower by-pass path, i.e. through openings 27, 20, 25 and 18, from the chamber 6 to the annular chamber 3. The remaining oil passes through an aperture 30 in the piston and the piston passage 8 opened by the valve 10. Oil displaced by the piston-rod 7 compresses, in the chamber 3, an elastic-sided chamber 29 containing air. When the piston 4 moves upwards, valves 26, 10 and 16 close openings 12, 8 and 14 and oil passes from chamber 5 through conduits 9 through the piston, normally closed by a valve 11 (with the greatest spring-loading) and oil is sucked from the annular chamber 3, into the chamber 6 through conduits 13, opened by a valve 15. This is so whether or not the lock valve 19 is operating.
