Abstract

1362788 Feeding webs MASSON SCOTT THRISSELL ENG Ltd 16 Sept 1971 [18 Sept 1970] 44593/70 Heading B8R [Also in Division F2] A reel, e.g. of paper, having a hollow core 2 is mounted in a stand (Fig. 1, not shown) by means of a pair of axially aligned rotatable shafts in the mutually facing ends of which gripping means are releasably held, the shafts being mounted for axial movement towards one another to grip a core positioned therebetween. As shown, the gripping means for each shaft includes a plurality of movable jaws 6 loosely held in recesses 24 formed in a housing (18) releasably attached to the end of the shaft by means of a releasable connection in the form of a spring loaded plunger (19, 20) Fig. 2 (not shown). The jaws have surfaces which can be arranged in tapered formation for insertion into the ends of the core 2, and which can then be spread into a cylindrical formation to grip the core, the spreading means comprising a pneumatically actuable rod slidably supported within the shaft and formed with a nose portion 11 which co-operates with the jaws 6. At least one shaft may be operatively connected to a disc brake.
