Abstract
1362200 Finishing fabric edges ELECTRICITY COUNCIL 27 Sept 1971 [28 Sept 1970] 46124/70 Heading D1S [Also in Divisions B3 B4 B5 and H5] An apparatus for cutting and/or welding material e.g. cloth, plastics, paper, leather, metal foil comprising a plasma torch 43, Fig. 1 (not shown), a support having a plurality of elongate elements 36, 40 arranged to make contact with the material so that the latter is supported over less than 80% of the area traversed by the plasma jet, the material being stationary with respect to the support. The support may comprise a perforated sheet of metal or a layer of wire mesh or expanded sheet metal; alternatively the support may comprise an array of metal rods or tubes 36, Fig. 4 attached to a backing 35 which may itself be perforated to allow escape of plasma gas; the rods may be bent in the direction of movement of the material Fig. 5 (not shown). As shown in Fig. 6, the plasma torch 43 is mounted on a crossbeam 45 for transverse movement thereon, the beam being movable longitudinally on rails 44. The motors for effecting movement of the torch and the beam may be under the control of an optical line follower working from drawings or a numerical controlled computer.
