Abstract

1429168 Finishing fabrics TEXTILAUSRUSTUNGS GES SCHROERS & CO 15 Feb 1973 38632/75 Divided out of 1427997 Heading DIS A flexible sheet, e.g. a plush pile fabric, is treated to impose an irregular structure thereon by crumpling the sheet longitudinally and transversely, the formation of the crumpled structure being assisted by pressing the sheet perpendicularly to its surface, from two sides at points offset in relation to one another. As shown, a plush fabric 30 fed from a roll 22 is pre-gathered transversely by rollers 31, 32 having parallel interdigitated discs thereon and similar rollers 33, 34 mounted on a carriage 6 reciprocable on rails 8. Drive rollers 4, 5 feed the fabric downwardly at a speed higher than the peripheral speed of rollers 35, 36 having radially projecting fingers thereon which crumple the fabric three dimensionally. The fabric passes between driven conveyor rollers 13, 14 and a back cloth 20 is fed from a roll 18. The two layer assembly passes through a channel 37 having a transparent cover to allow inspection and is wound on a member 24 having a perforated winding tube through which steam is blown during the subsequent fixing treatment. The fingers on the rollers 35, 36 may be arranged to form spaced spiders and the fingers of one roller engage between the fingers of the other roller, Fig. 3 (not shown). The individual spiders on the two rollers may be disposed precisely opposite one another, Fig. 7 (not shown), or they may be disposed offset in relation to one another, Fig. 8 (not shown). In modifications (not shown), a back cloth is provided on each side of the sheet or, if the fabric is made of thermoplastic material, the fabric is heated whilst it is crumpled to effect fixing of the crumpled structure.
