Abstract
1361712 Centrifugal separators; centrifugal filter ADVANCED PRODUCT ENG CORP 6 April 1972 15898/72 Headings BID BIT and B2P An apparatus for removing, e.g. solid or liquid particles from a fluid, e.g. gas or liquid, comprises a stationary housing 11, Fig. 1, an inlet 10 for introducing particles-laden fluid into the housing, a shaft 14 supported by the housing, a rotatable, cylindrically-shaped filter 17 supoprted by the shaft, means 13 for rotating the shaft, a compressor positioned within the housing between the inlet and the filter for producing a positive fluid flow through the apparatus and swirling of the fluid between the housing and the filter, a stationary outlet 12 for the filtered fluid, expander means 25 positioned within the housing between the filter and the outlet for extracting energy remaining in the filtered fluid, the compressor and the expander means both including a plurality of vanes 23 and 25a respectively arranged about the shaft 14, the outlet 12 being located downstream of the inlet 10, the expander vanes 25a being located downstream of the compressor vanes 23, and the expander vanes being spaced inwardly from the outer periphery of the compressor vanes. The apparatus may be installed with its shaft vertical or horizontal. The filter 17 comprises a frame 17a which supports a layer 18 of polyurethane foam or asbestos fibre surrounded by a metallic screen 19. The filter is secured to a plate 15 coupled to the shaft 14 and carrying a core 16 which deflects the filtered fluid towards the expander 25 and the outlet 12 which comprises one or more outlet ports. A core 20 is supported by the frame 17a-to rotate therewith. The compressor vanes 23 are bolted to the plate 15 and are provided with adjustable bent extensions 24, Fig. 3, which produce pre-swirling or counter-swirling of the fluid forced by the vanes in the space 30 whereby large particles are separated by centrifugal force against the core 20 which deflects the fluid and small particles on to the filter 17. The large particles fall to the bottom of the housing 11 and are removed at 21. Alternatively, the core 20 may be dispensed with and the large particles are thrown against the wall of the housing. The expander means 25 is in the form of a turbine with its vanes 25a secured to the top of the core 16. A cylindrical deflector 26 secured to the turbine directs the filtered fluid towards the outlet 12. In the construction of Fig. 5, two filters 40, 41 are arranged preferably in parallel. A guide member 42 secured to the top of the turbine vanes 25a directs the flow of filtered fluid out to the outlet 12. A scrubbing action of the fluid (e.g. gas) may be effected by fluid (e.g. water) fed by a pump 45 from a reservoir 46 through piping 47 opening into the interior of the housing. In a modification, the inner filter 40 and the inner core may be removed and the apparatus will function as in Fig. 1 with additional scrubbing action. Uses of the apparatus are given.
