Abstract
1,262,961. Centrifugal separators; comminuting apparatus. P. WILLEMS [trading as PHYSIK-CHEM. FORSCHUNGS INSTITUT PROF. P. WILLEMS]. 25 Feb., 1969 [26 Feb., 1968], No. 10029/69. Headings B2A and B2P. An apparatus for separating components of different specific gravities of a flowable mixture, e.g. heavy impurities and fibres contained in a liquid pulp of such fibres, comprises a pressure casing consisting of one or more intermediate parts 3, Figure 1, mounted between end parts 1 and 2. A mixture inlet 5 is formed in the part 1 and contains a valve 6 for controlling the speed at which the mixture enters the apparatus. A rotor 8 mounted on a rotatable shaft 7 is provided in the or each part 3. Radial or curved, preferably removable, centrifugal blades 9 are provided on that face of the rotor facing the incoming mixture while the opposite face of the rotor is smooth. Each part 3 carries on its rear annular wall preferably detachable, radial guide blades 10 and on its peripheral wall one or more magnets 11 for retaining iron partides or, alternatively, annular segments of non-magnetic materials. Radial passages 12 between the magnets or segments have a wall which serves to arrest or brake the circular movement of the heavy component so that the latter is discharged through the passages into a collecting space 13 from which they are intermittently removed by means of an operable closure 14 into a container 18 which is provided with a sight glass 15, a light 16 and an outlet 17 and contains a water spray nozzle 20 for rinsing the container or for separating out from the heavy component any entrained light component which is subsequently conveyed back to the flow path of the light component. After separation in the successive annular spaces S, in which vortices are generated by rotation of the bladed rotors 8, the light component is discharged through an outlet 21 in which a screw 22 is arranged to extract liquid from the light component, such liquid passing through perforations 23 into a collecting space 25 and thence through a valved pipe 27. The light component then enters a three-stage comminuting device 28 which takes the form of a Ginematic high frequency generator, i.e. a disc-type impact pulverizer, having intercalating members on a rotor and stator. The apparatus of Figure 2 in which the flow of the mixture is downwards shows a different type of comminuting device 28 for the light component. A shaft 104 drivable by an electric motor 105 independently of the separator shaft 7 has discs 103a-c secured thereto. Comminution is effected by spaced rotor elements, e.g. 113a, on the discs which cooperate with spaced stator elements, e.g. 114a, fixed to the underside of funnels, e.g. 102a-b, which serve to guide the light component downwardly through the successive comminuting units a, b, c. With the valve 116 on the outlet 115 fully opened, the comminuted light component is thrown against the peripheral walls, e.g. 101a, of the successive units and moves downwardly. When it is desired to increase the degree of comminution by increasing the retention time of the light component in the device 28, the valve 116 is closed to the desired extent and the light component is partly or wholly recirculated in each unit as indicated by the closed dotted loops. The rotor and stator elements may take the form of blades or pins of various crosssections. An adjusting device may be provided to vary the working gap between the rotor and stator elements and the gap between the top edge of the rotor elements and the underside of the funnels. Cooling or heating medium may be supplied at 118 and discharged at 119.
