Abstract

1361609 Cable joints BRITISH INSULATED CALLENDER'S CABLES Ltd 8 Nov 1971 [7 Aug 1970] 38242/70 Heading H2E [Also in Division H1] An electric cable comprising insulated power conductors (either solid or stranded) and a neutral conductor, has coaxial connectors embedded, at least partially, in the outer insulating sheath of the cable at a number of spaced locations along the length of the cable to each of which a service cable may be attached. The inner conductor of the connector is connected to a power conductor, and the outer conductor to the neutral conductor of the cable. The insulation about each connector may be embossed or coloured for identification, e.g. of phase. As shown, Fig. 2 (c), the connector may include a strap 11 in electrical contact with the neutral conductor 8; insulation 17 separating outer conductors 12 and inner conductors 15 which may be friction-welded to the power conductor as at 14, and may contain a socket 16. Either or both conductors of at least one connector may be of bimetallic construction, e.g. copper and aluminium or aluminium alloy. In one method of making the cable, a hole is formed at each connector-site through the cable to expose a power conductor and the connector assembled as shown, preferably so that the part of the inner conductor to which the service cable is to be connected is perpendicular to the distribution cable. The connectors may then be embedded in plastic so that the covering is integral with or bonded to the cable sheath, e.g. by injecting or pouring the insulating material into a mould or by wrapping with plastics tape which is subsequently heated. An alternative method of making the cable comprises connecting a tubular boss, e.g. 12, to the neutral conductor of the cable and using it as a jig to drill the hole for the inner conductor of the connector. The connectors may also be grouped in pairs as in Fig. 4, with the inner conductor of both connectors being connected to the same power conductor by means of member 46. Straps 53 connect the outer conductor of both coaxial connectors to the neutral conductor 43 of the distribution cable. The paired connectors may be embedded as above; or if the distribution cable has not been sheathed the connectors may be embedded during the subsequent sheathing.
