Abstract

1361602 Electrolysis of brine ALBRIGHT & WILSON Ltd 4 May 1971 [8 May 1970] 22427/70 Heading C7B Brine is electrolysed using an anode comprising a base metal supporting member, e.g. of Fe, Cu, Al, Ni, Zn or alloy thereof, having on the anodic surface a layer having a thickness of not more than one tenth of that of the base metal of an anodically passivatable metal of group 5A of the periodic table, e.g. of Ta or Nb. coated with a non-protective thin layer of a platinum metal or alloy thereof, or inert metal or semi-conductive material, e.g. an oxide of a platinum metal and/or mixture of such oxides with oxides of Pb, Mn, Co, Fe, Cr, Ti, Ta, Si or Zr. If the electrode is to be bipolar, either the base metal supporting member itself forms the cathodic surface, being e.g. of mild steel or copper, or may be coated with a protective layer of a material chemically resistant to the catholyte, e.g. of copper. An intermediate layer, e.g. of copper may be between the base member e.g. of mild steel, and the GpVa metal layer. As shown a cell 1, e.g. for producing sodium chlorate, is formed of insulating material, e.g. of PVC or PTFE, containing a stack of bipolar electrodes 3 as described above, and having side inlets (9) to each cell compartment near the base of the cell and means for overflowing of each compartment, is submerged in a reservoir of brine, gas bubbles produced during electrolysis producing an upflow of electrolyte between the electrodes with consequent overflow into the reservoir, and flow of fresh electrolyte into the cell.
