Abstract
1480343 Bi-polar electrode unit IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 4 Oct 1974 [5 Nov 1973] 51227/73 Heading C7B A bi-polar electrode, e.g. for alkali metal chloride electrolysis, comprises (a) a laminate of (i) a sheet of film forming metal having an anodic electrocatalytically active coating, (ii) a first sheet of iron or steel and (iii) a continuous metallic interlayer between the said sheets which is bonded to at least one of the sheets by means of an electroconductive cement and which is such in use as to substantially reduce hydrogen diffusion from the iron or steel sheet to the other sheet, and (b) a cathode of foraminous iron or steel parallel to, spaced from and electrically connected with said first sheet of iron or steel. The film forming metal is Ti, Zr, Nb, Ta or W or an alloy thereof, e.g. Ti with Zr, Pt, Rh, Ir, Nb or Ta. The anodic coating is conventional e.g. a Pt group metal and/or oxide, Re, Re 2 O 3 , magnetite, Ti 3 N 4 or a boride, silicide or nitride of a Pt group metal and may contain a non-conducting oxide e.g. of Ti or Sn. The interlayer may be of Al, Co, Cu, Pb, Ni, Pt, Ag or Su or may be a binary alloy of Sn + Bi, Cd, Pb or Zn; Bi + Cd, Pb, Sn or Zn; Cd + Bi or Zn; Zn + Bi, Cd, Pb or Sn; Sn + Pb and Zn, where the first mentioned metal is in each case the major component, or Pb with up to 50% Sn. This layer may be a separate sheet or a coating on one or both sheets of the bi-polar unit and may be bonded with a bisphenol A-epichlorhydrin condensate crosslinked with an amine and filled e.g. with 50-90% of Zn, Cu or Ag. The interlayer coating may be applied conventionally or, when it is on the filmforming metal, using the ultrasonic method of Specification 1236997. The cathodic sheet may be perforated, a gauze, woven mesh or expanded metal, and may be associated with, as by coating, a diaphragm e.g. of PTFE or asbestos. A cell containing the bi-polar unit may have terminal anodes and cathodes of the same material as the bi-polar unit.
