Abstract

1360786 Joining monorail beams R C PURDY 13 Jan 1972 [3 Nov 1970] 52107/70 Heading B7L A pair of similar monorail beams 10a, 10b are each formed of two angle members placed back to back with an intervening cavity, the outwardly projecting flanges 14a, 14b constituting the track surfaces, and the beam 10a carries a transverse pivot 16 and a protrusion 17 extending from the cavity and having curved upper and lower surfaces centred on the axis of pivot 16, while the beam 10b is provided with a hook member 18 for engaging the pivot 16, a pivotable detent 21 which in one position allows insertion and withdrawal of the protrusion 17 and in another position engages a stop lug 20 on the latter to prevent withdrawal and an abutment 19 extending across the cavity in beam 10b which lug engages the upper surface of the protrusion, the joint between the beams allowing relative vertical angular movement limited by the stop 20, 21. In another embodiment the detent 21 is omitted and the abutment 19 is replaced by a removable bolt which engages in a recess formed in the upper surface of the protrusion. In a third embodiment the hook 18 is integral with a metal block or plate welded in the cavity of the beam 10b and defining a pocket with a curved upper edge and an upward projection for engaging the protrusion. In a fourth embodiment the beams are formed of two back-to-back channel sections and the protrusion extends above the beam from the cavity between the vertical central webs and is formed with a recess on its upper surface in which is engaged a bolt carried by two spaced back-to-back angle members at the end of the beam 10b. The adjacent ends of the beams are inclined to facilitate angular displacement and the component angle members may be connected by a metal block welded into the cavity at at least one location intermediate the ends.
