Abstract

1358836 Polyether polythiol textile-treating compositions CIBA-GEIGY (UK) Ltd 14 June 1971 [2 July 1970] 32240/70 Heading C3R [Also in Division D1] Compositions for application to cellulosic fibres comprise polyether polythiols obtained by end-capping polyol-alkylene oxide condensation products with mercapto-carboxylic acids or with epihalohydrin and sodium hydrosulphide, in admixture with aminoplasts free from ethylenic unsaturation. The aminoplast preferably contains at least two -CH 2 OR<SP>4</SP> groups linked to amidic or thioamidic nitrogen, where R<SP>4</SP> is hydrogen, C 1 -C 4 alkyl or acetyl, and may be based on urea, thiourea, or cyclic ureas of Formula I in which Y denotes either a group of Formula II or a C 2 -C 4 divalent group which may be substituted by methyl, methoxy and hydroxy groups, and may be interrupted by -CO-, -O-, or where R<SP>5</SP> denotes an alkyl or hydroxy alkyl group (1-4 C), Q denotes oxygen or sulphur. Further aminoplasts may be based on carbamates and dicarbamates of aliphatic monohydric and dihydric alcohols, and melamine. Curing may take place spontaneously or in the presence of catalysts and under conditions of elevated temperature, which accelerate the curing process. Curing catalysts for the polythiol include: siccatives, e.g. metal naphthenates, oxidizing agents; sulphur; sulphurcontaining compounds, e.g. mercaptobenzothiazoles, dithiocarbamates, thiuram sulphides, thioureas, alkyl xanthates, alkyl xanthogen disulphides and other disulphides; organic bases, e.g. mono- and polyamines; inorganic bases, e.g. sodium hydroxide, phosphate, tetraborate or carbonate; free radical catalysts, e.g. azodiisobutyronitrile, peroxides and hydroperoxides; and heavy metal salts and chelates. Curing catalysts for the aminoplast include latent acid compounds in the form of metal or ammonium salts, strong acids in solution or gaseous form, and organic or inorganic bases. Curing of the polythiol is assisted by high humidities and a pH in the range 7À5-12.
