Abstract

1358102 Cooling systems for I.C. engines SAF-GARD PRODUCTS Inc 28 May 1971 17789/71 Heading F4U [Also in Division F2] A cooling system for an I.C. engine 10, includes in the return conduit to the radiator 11 a valve body 18, the valve body 18 having a coolant passageway 30 and a valve chamber 31 which is closed by a pressure cap 32. The valve body is interconnected with an accumulator tank 15 by a combined overflow and return line 41. An overflow line 37 is connected at one end through a bottom wall 33 to a pocket 39 at the lower end of the chamber 31, and has its opposite end 40 opening into the air pocket 25 above the top level 26 of tne coolant 23 in the radiator reservoir 24. Within the chamber 31 are two check valves, namely a check valve 50 which opens in a direction allowing flow from the coolant reservoir 24 to the accumulator tank 15 and a check valve 51 which allows flow from the tank 15 to the coolant reservoir 24. In operation when the engine overheats steam and coolant from space 25 is vented by pipe 37 to the space beneath valve 50. Valve 50 is lifted by the pressure and the liquid is allowed to pass via openings 56, the open lower end of stem 46, and the relief tube 41 to the tank 15. When the engine cools a partial vacuum forms in the system and coolant is returned by the atmospheric pressure in tank 15 along tube 41. Valve 51 now opens against the action of a weak restoring spring and the returning fluid is conveyed by pipe 37 to the reservoir space 25. The valve body 18 may be made of transparent plastics material so that the flow of coolant to the radiator may be seen. For topping up the system a liquid fill fitting 70 may be provided having a spring loaded valve normally keeping it closed. In another form (Figs. 7, 8, not shown) the usual filler cap on the radiator is modified and a pipe taken from the filler neck to the tank 15.
