Abstract

1298553 Pumping cryogenic liquids HYMATIC ENG CO Ltd 10 March 1970 [12 March 1969] 12992/69 Heading F1R In a cryogenic liquid transfer system which comprises a main liquid supply vessel, an auxiliary supply vessel in communication with the main supply vessel through a non-return valve, a supply pipe extending from the auxiliary supply vessel, and a receiver to receive liquid through the supply pipe the auxiliary supply vessel is in communication with a venting valve responsive to the level of liquid in the receiver. As shown, refrigerant liquid e.g. liquid nitrogen, enters an auxiliary vessel 14 via a one-way valve 15 from a main supply vessel 11, e.g. a Dewar flask. On evaporation in vessel 14 due to heat leaking into the vessel 11, liquid is forced along the supply pipe 20 to the receiver 24 e.g. a Dewar flask, until the liquid rises and cools a sensor 33 resulting in contraction of a bellows 30 which contains a volatile liquid, and movement of a needle 29 away from a seating 28. This vents the vessel 14 through a pipe 16, a chamber 27 and a passage above the seating 28 and so the transfer of liquid stops. The pipe 16 may have an injector to assist liquid transfer. The bellows 30 may be assisted by a spring. The chamber 27 has a relief valve 25 responding at a pressure slightly above atmospheric.
