1357870 Garden umbrellas BREMSHEY A G 14 Oct 1971 31822/73 Divided out of 1357014 Heading A4P A garden umbrella is operable by operating a remote control lever 23', Fig. 3, to draw a carrier 12, carrying a crown 11, telescopically into a shaft 2 until the movement is limited by a stop 38, the displacement of the crown carrier during opening and closing being substantially equal to the separation D in the axial direction of the shaft with the umbrella open of the pivot 13' of each spoke 9, 15 to the crown from the pivot 5' of the corresponding strut 4 to a member 39 fixed relative to the shaft 2, and the component z of the displacement in the axial direction of the shaft of the pivots 10 between the spokes and struts 4 during opening or closing being substantially half the distance y between corresponding pivots 10 and 13'. A hinge part 26' of a stirrup-shaped lever 23' is coupled by a flexible tension element 27 to carrier 12, the part 26' being displaced vertically during opening or closing by a distance greater than y but smaller than the length of each strut 4, and y does not exceed about a third of the total length of each spoke. Lever 23' moves through a dead-centre position during opening so that no mechanism is required to retain the umbrella open, and after passing back through the deadcentre position subsequent closure is effected automatically due to the weight of the outer part of the cover. The shaft 2 comprises sections 2', 2" pivoted together at 51 so that the upper section 2" carrying the cover support assembly can be arranged at an angle to section 2', a slidable sleeve 48 being used to maintain sections 2', 2" in alignment when required. The tension element 27 passes through guide channels in a base member 42, in sleeve 48, in member 39 and in stop 38. By use of a wire-in-sleeve type connection the guide channel in the sleeve 48 may be eliminated, Fig. 11 (not shown). Outer spoke parts 15 may be removably engaged in channels 63, Fig. 13, in inner parts 9 by cross-slitting inner ball-shaped ends 73 of parts 15, springs 64 urging the parts 15 into tip member 66 stitched through holes 68 to the cover 67, loops 69 or disengagable press-studs further securing the cover 67 to spoke parts 15.
