Abstract

1354726 Coated glass NIPPON SHEET GLASS CO Ltd 28 July 1971 [29 July 1970] 35508/71 Heading C7F Sheet window or optical glass is coated on at least one face with a film of a nitride, carbide or silicide of an element of Gp. IV, V, or VI of the Mendeleev Periodic Table. Preferred films are Cr carbide, Cr nitride, Cr silicide, SiC + TiN; the thickness may be 5-200 millimicrons, and the film is applied by sputtering, e.g. RF sputtering in Ar or reactive sputtering in N 2 to form a nitride or mixed nitride, e.g. of Cr/Mo or Cr/Ti, or by vapour-deposition using electronbeam heating, the glass being ion-bombardment cleaned prior to coating. An apparatus is described wherein glass sheets are moved in sequence past ion bombardment cleaning means and then past water-cooled sputtering cathodes. Coatings of chromium carbide, nitride, or silicide may be post-treated in water or steam above 60‹C for at least 30 hours to improve their abrasion resistance.
