1354482 Umbrella runners A FULTON CO Ltd 12 May 1971 [12 May 1970] 22921/70 Heading A4P An umbrella runner comprises a member B with a head part 10 for mounting struts and a sleeve 11 movable relative to a hand-operable barrel member A of the runner, the member B having a catch 4 urged by a spring (7), Fig. 3 (not shown) so that a nose 9 engages in a notch in the umbrella shaft to hold the umbrella open, the member A having a hump 12a in which the catch 4 is located, and relative movement of the members A and B causing release of the catch 4 by the engagement thereof with a striker pin 14 carried by member A. The runner may have one catch only for holding the umbrella open or a first catch for holding it open and a second for holding it closed, the catches being located in diametrically opposed humps 12a of member A. Striker pins 14 in the member A and sliding in slots 15 in member B release the catches. To close the umbrella, member A is drawn down the shaft to first release the first catch and then move the members A and B together down the shaft. To open the umbrella the member A is pushed towards the member B releasing the second catch and disengaging the first catch from its striker pin, continued movement of members A and B together up the shaft then being effected until the spring of the first catch pushes the nose thereof into the notch of the shaft.
