Abstract

1353761 Hydroxypivaldehyde; neopentyl glycol RUHRCHEMIE AG 16 July 1971 [16 Sept 1970] 33575/71 Heading C2C Hydroxypivaldehyde is prepared by condensing isobutyraldehyde with formaldehyde in the presence of a basic substance and in more than one stage, the pH throughout the reaction being maintained at 10-12, the reaction in the first stage being effected at a pH of 10-11 and in the final stage at a pH of 11-12, the pH being increased by the addition of a basic substance. Excess isobutyraldehyde is preferably present in the stage or stages after the first. A solvent may be used. Substantial amounts of neopentyl glycol are obtained as by-product.
