Abstract

1349987 Femoral endo-prostheses F D TIMMERMANS 27 March 1971 [31 March 1970] 8015/71 Heading A5R Means for forming a femoral endo-prosthesis comprises a plastics intra-medullary nail having straight parts g, h inclined to one another and provided with intersecting bores l, v, a femoral head having a frustopherical cap b with a metallic outer surface and retained on a spherical portion in a manner allowing relative movement between cap b and said portion along the axis of a radial bore i therein, said radial bore i being a snug fit on the part h and the spherical part being of plastics and including a resilient damping member o on which the cap b bears in use, and reinforcing pins m, d for snugly fitting into bores l and i after the intra-medullary nail has been inserted into the medullary cavity of a femur, pin d being longer than bore i and having a leading portion f to engage in a hole drilled into the trocharter. The member o is provided with cavities p to modify its damping properties, and the leading portion f is provided with a plastics sheath e. The cap b may be a metal shell or a plastics shell having a metallic outer surface, and is retained by a lip t engaging in an annular groove u in a part c of the femoral head. The head of the pin d which head in use is received in the femoral head, may have a threaded hole therein to aid extraction. The nail g, h may be of thermoplastics material which softens at 80-100‹C to allow the nail to be accurately aligned during insertion.
