Abstract

1348526 Cleaning and polishing cloths P F FEIG 24 May 1971 [18 July 1970] 16585/71 Heading A4F [Also in Division C4] A cleaning and polishing cloth comprises a carrier material and particles of a porous oxide gel bound to the carrier material by a polymeric binding agent, which anchors the particles but does not penetrate them, the particles projecting from the binding agent. Preferably the particles are of synthetic silica or alumina gel and the preferred particle size is 1À5Á to 60Á. The carrier may be a non-woven fabric of viscose, rayon, cotton or rayon-cotton mixtures. Binding agents mentioned are polyacrylates, polymethacrylates, polyvinyl chloride, polyvinylidene chloride and polyvinyl acetate. Penetration by the binder into the particles is prevented by selection of the polymer or by pre-treating the particles with dilute aqueous ammonia. The particles are applied to the carrier as a slurry in the binder dispersion, the ratio of particles to binder being high enough to ensure that they project from the binding agent in the finished product.
