Abstract
1348152 Bolts; rivets LAMSON & SESSIONS CO 12 Oct 1971 47467/71 Heading F2H A member such as a screw 14, rivet or bush has a shank portion 22 having axially-extending waves on its external surface 36 defined by a series of continuously annular crests 24 and troughs 28, the amplitude of the waves being between 0À001 and 0À005 of an inch, the crests being adapted to interfere with the internal walls of a bore 16, 18 through jointed workpieces 10, 12 to provide a prestressed connection, and the troughs facilitating insertion of the fastener into the bore by reducing frictional contact. The waves are preferably sinusoidal in cross-section, having a pitch of between 0À05 and 0À8, and more especially 0À6, times the bore diameter. The outside diameter of the crests may be increased progressively toward the head of the fastener to provide increasing interference. The crests 24 and troughs 28 preferably extend perpendicularly in relation to the longitudinal axis of the fastener, but may, if desired, be skewed slightly relative to this axis.
