Abstract

1347246 Flexible hoses DUNLOP HOLD INGS Ltd 1 June 1971 [29 May 1970] 25957/70 Heading F2P Flexible hose is manufactured by extruding a hose carcass layer of polymeric material such as natural or synthetic rubber on to a flexible mandrel and helically winding reinforcing wires around the hose carcass. A layer of resilient cushioning material, e.g. fabric or nylon flock, may be applied between the carcass layer and the reinforcing wires. Further helically wound reinforcing layers may be provided, spaced from each other by layers of polymeric material and, optionally, layers of cushioning material. The wires in adjacent layers are wound in opposite hands. After winding of the reinforcing wires a further polymeric layer may be applied, the whole assembly being sheathed in lead and vulcanized. In the apparatus described the flock coated carcass 2, supported by a flexible nylon mandrel 3 is advanced through a bore n a rotatable disc 8, that carries a number of bobbins 6. Each bobbin is mounted on a carrier 7 so that it may rotate thereon against a spring- loaded brake and the wire or wires 1 from each bobbin pass around pulleys 9, 10 to tension them, over a spacing ring 11, through a hole 13 in a guide plate 12, and over a second spacing ring 14 into a die 5 which consolidates the wires into a closely packed layer. The tortuous path provided for the wires acts to reduce the springiness of the wires and to leave a residual deformation in the wires which tends to hold them on the carcass.
