Abstract

1344074 Cushioning rams LANSING BAGNALL LTD 19 April 1971 [24 March 1970] 14298/70 Heading F1D An hydraulic ram is damped at the end of its stroke by throttled discharge through a restricted passage 25, the piston 16 sliding on a tubular element 18 fixed in cylinder 10 and having a hollow rod 15. An outlet 26 element 18 connects cylinder 10 to the interior of element 18 which is connected to an outlet and the interior of cylinder 10 also communicates by opening 41 in rod 15 with the interior of rod 15 which in turn communicates via restricted passage 25 with the interior of tubular element 18. Thus, if piston 16 is moving rightwards to the position of Fig 1B, then fluid normally flows both through outlet 26 to the interior of element 18 and exhaust, and through outlet 41 and passage 25 to element 18 and exhaust At the end of the stroke, outlet 26 is covered by an element 19 of piston 16 and fluid can only flow through opening 41 and restricted passage 25 so as to damp piston movement. To return piston 16 the element 39, in which passage 25 is formed, is thrust off its seat by feeding inlet fluid to element 18. Element 39 has a square cross section (Fig. 2, (not shown) which co-operates with the larger diameter part 22 of tubular element 18 to permit fluid to flow past element 39 and through opening 41 to move piston 16 leftwards.
