Abstract

1343844 Valves L CAZZANIGA 19 April 1971 [5 Sept 1970] 26072/71 Heading F2V In a valve having a cylindrical cavity 2, an annular seat portion 3 perpendicular to the axis of the cylinder, and an angled seat portion 4, the valve member 5 is encased in a resilient sealing member having a cylindrical portion 6, a toroidal portion 7 and a frusto-conical end portion 8, the outside diameter of the cylindrical portion 6 being slightly less than the inner diameter of the cavity 2. In operation, as the valve member is moved to obturate flow between inlet la and outlet 1b, firstly only the toroidal portion 7 engages seat portion 3. Thereafter, further movement of the valve member results in the toroidal portion being compressed and so in the cylindrical portion 6 being laterally expanded to engage the walls of cavity 2. Still further movement of the valve member results in the conical portion 8 engaging the seat angled portion 4. The sealing member is secured to the valve member 5 by projections 9, 10. In modifications (Figs. 2-4, not shown) the frusto-conical portion 8 of the sealing member is dispensed with, the sealing member is secured to the valve member in a different manner, and the uppermost portion of the sealing member is formed integrally with a diaphragm anchored at its periphery.
