Abstract

1343682 Abrasive tools NORTON CO 26 April 1971 [27 April 1970] 11433/71 Heading B3D An abrasive finishing article 10, Fig. 1, comprises a backing member 12 defining a central opening, a drive member 16 consisting of a boss 18 disposed through the opening and projecting from one side of the backing member, an outwardly extending member 38, Fig. 2, at the base of the boss disposed on the opposite side of the backing member, means 17 securing the drive member to the backing member, and finishing material 14 on the opposite side of the backing member. The securing means may consist of tabs 17 which are bent to grip the backing member against the outwardly extending member in the form of a flange. The upper end of the boss 18 has a lip 20 formed with a cut 22 to act as a screw-thread for receiving the thread 30 of a connecting stud 28 which extends through a flexible support pad 24 having a recess 34 to receive the tabs 17. The pad 24 has a central socket 31, Fig. 4, with a recess 33 of a depth 48 so that the inner periphery of the backing member is clamped against the flange. When assembled, a straight edge can be placed on the finishing material 14 without contacting the flange. In another embodiment, the drive member has a hexagonal boss which is a press fit in a hexagonal opening in the backing member. In a further embodiment, the boss is circular and the backing member is secured by adhesive to the flange.
