Abstract

1343360 Densified polyurethane foam OLIN CORP 3 Dec 1971 [7 Dec 1970] 56267/71 Addition to 1240649 Heading C3R [Also in Divisions B4-B5] Flexible densified polyurethane foam is prepared by (a) allowing a polyurethane foamforming reaction mixture to rise and form a partially cured cellular material, (b) applying a compressive force to the partially cured cellular material after a period of 0 to 10 minutes after completion of the rise, thereby to reduce the volume of the partially cured material to between 2/3 and 1/10 of its original volume and (c) removing the compressive force and completing the cure of the compressed cellular material, with the proviso that where the period of time between completion of the rise and application of the compressive force is 0 to 2À5 minutes the partially cured cellular material is maintained at an environmental temperature of 45 to 400‹ F. for the period, where the said period is 2À5 to 5 minutes the environmental temperature is 45 to 200‹ F. and where the said period is 5 to 10 minutes the environmental temperature is 45 to 110‹ F. for the period, the polyol employed in the foam-forming reaction mixture comprising a blend of a first polyol of M.W.2000-10,000 and a second polyol of M.W. 100-1500, in a weight ratio of first polyol to second polyol of 9 : 1 to 1 : 4. The first and second polyols are preferably polyether polyols and most suitably are oxypropylated glycerines. A filler, preferably barytes, may be added to the foam-forming reaction mixture. Conventional polyisocyanates, catalysts, blowing agents and surfactants are employed in the foamforming reaction mixture. Preferably the environmental temperature is 70 to 110‹ F. The partially cured foam is compressed by rollers or platens. The compressed foams may be used for making foam cushions, pillows, mattress pads, automobile interior paddings, bumper guards, case liners, paddings for delicate instruments and for the backing of rugs, tiles and carpets.
