Abstract

Foamed polyurethanes are prepared by confining separately under pressure a first and second mix, the first mix comprising a propellant and an isocyanate terminated quasi-prepolymer which is the reaction product of a polyol with excess organic polyisocyanate and the second mix comprising a propellant, sufficient polyol to react with the excess isocyanate in the first mix and a catalyst for promoting the reaction, combining the first and second mixes by means of their pressure differential into a common mixture while maintaining the mixture under pressure, agitating the confined admixture to effect a resin forming reaction and releasing the resulting mixture in the form of an aerosol to produce a foamed polyurethane on curing. The preferred polyols are polyethers or polyesters especially ethylene oxide tipped polyoxypropylene and reaction products of propylene oxide and sorbitol, methyl glucoside and sucrose. Conventional aliphatic and aromatic diisocyanates may be used and the preferred catalysts are tertiary amines. Trichlorofluoromethane is a suitable propellant. The two mixes are suitably contained in aerosol containers, the mix at the higher pressure being forced into that at the lower pressure.
