Abstract
1342804 Treating aqueous material DOW CHEMICAL CO 21 Sept 1971 43987/71 Heading C1C [Also in Division A2] A method for protecting aqueous material from attack by microbial organisms during use in a manufacturing process and then making the material safe for disposal or discharge to an environment or system (e.g. trickling tower or activated sludge system) containing organisms, comprises adding to the aqueous material at a pH of 3À5-7 a bromocyanoacetamide of formula wherein X = Cl, Br or H and R = CH 3 or H, and before disposal or discharge adjusting the pH to 8-14 with a water-soluble base and holding the mixture for a time sufficient to render the material safe for disposal or discharge. The aqueous material may be a paper mill water ; it may contain cellulosic material, starch, proteins, lignins, sulphites and inorganic salts. The base may be ammonium or alkali metal hydroxide or carbonate. The bromocyanoacetamide may be used in admixture with polyethylene glycol, sulphonated alkylbenzenes, alkylatedaryl polyether alcohols, alkali metal salts of alkylaryl sulphonates, condensation products of mercaptane with ethylene oxide, sorbitan monolaurate polyoxyethylene derivatives, talc, clay, kieselguhr and chlorine. Organisms from which the aqueous material may be protected are Aerobacter aerogenes, Bacillus subtilis, Penicillium chyrosegenum, Aspergillus terreus and Candida pelliculosa.
