Abstract

1340232 Knitting machines; looms; warping machines APPALACHIAN ELECTRONIC INSTRUMENTS Inc 20 Sept 1971 [15 Oct 1970] 43704/71 Headings D1C DIE and D1M {Also in Division G1] In an apparatus for detecting broken yarns in a moving yarn sheet, in a warping machine, loom or knitting machine, such as a tricot or warp knitting machine a detector head unit 10 mounted at one side of the sheet directs a light beam 18 to a target unit 11 which is mounted at the other side of the sheet and which redirects the beam to the detector unit, the light beam being sufficiently close to the sheet that a broken end will interrupt the beam to produce an output from a photocell 26. The detector head includes a tungsten filament lamp 25 and a phototransistor 26 having a preamplifier (Fig. 5, not shown) and which receives the redirected light beam via a semitransparent mirror 27. The target unit includes a strip of retro-reflecting material 47 for returning the beam. When a broken end is detected the photocell output actuates a relay for stopping the yarn production or producing an alarm signal.
