Abstract

1,239,532. Ketonitriles. DYNAMIT NOBEL A.G. 3 Feb., 1970 [4 Feb., 1969], No. 5212/70. Heading C2C. [Also in Division A5] Novel ketonitriles having the general formula wherein R 1 and R 2 are each C 1 -C 4 alkyl groups, R 3 and R 4 are each hydrogen or C 1 -C 4 alkyl groups or together form a cyclic ring, and n is 0, 1 or 2, are prepared by condensing a diol of the formula (II) with a cyanaldehyde of the formula in the presence of an acidic catalyst. The condensation is preferably carried in an inert solvent which is capable of acting as an entraining agent to remove any water formed during the reaction. The diol may be obtained by condensation of formaldehyde with an aliphatic ketone which latter also contains a methylene group, in the presence of an alkaline catalyst. The ketonitriles, in admixture with an inert carrier, may be used as herbicides.
