Abstract
1,238,429. Gasifying fuels. UNION RHEINISCHE BRAUNKOHLEN KRAFTSTOFF A.G. 16 Feb., 1970 [14 Feb., 1969], No. 7289/70. Heading C5E. A solid or liquid carbonaceous fuel, e.g. coal, is gasified in a fluidized bed B in the presence of steam or CO 2 , part at least of the heat required being supplied by a melt bath C 1 , C 2 which is heated in direct or indirect heat exchange by a hot gas D. The bed may be coke or an inert material where a liquid is the fuel. The bath may be a metal, e.g. lead, an alloy, a salt or a glass, and the gas D may be coolant helium from a nuclear reactor. Product gas may be included with the steam or CO 2 which is delivered at E, and traverses the bath, and ash is withdrawn at H. The bath may be divided by walls G, as shown, or may be undivided and support the bed B directly, see Figs. 1 and 2 (not shown). The fuel may be delivered to the bed through the bath, and air or O 2 may be delivered to the bed.
